How to get an old Epson Scanner (Perfection 1200U) working under Windows 7

I thought my scanner would need to be ditched, or more likely I’d have to install it on an old pc and run that. Thankfully this guy on youtube here figured it out. I should have thought of it really but here’s what I did…

  1. Get the XP drivers from the Epson website (the 1200U drivers are here under TWAIN Driver v5.53A).
  2. Extract the drivers.
  3. The setup.exe will run automatically, cancel it.
  4. Navigate to the setup.exe (probably in C:\epson\ somewhere), right click and go to “Troubleshoot compatibility”.
  5. A few moments later it’ll give you the option to run it in XP SP2 compatibility mode, which installs properly and now I can use my scanner :)

  1. Many thanks for the great advice.
i’d tried all sorts of ‘ voodoo’ from the internet and this was the piece of magic that worked.
I was looking to blow £200+ on a new V600 scanner so am well happy I can uprade my memory instead.
    Many thanks

  2. Excellent.

Thanks for the help. I love my Perfection 1200 and would be very disappointed if I couldn’t get it to work.

This ‘backwards compatibility feature of Windows7 appears to be quite powerful – it’s just a shame Microsoft aren’t better at advertising it.

  3. Thank you for commenting both of you, helps motivate me to share anything useful I bump into and makes me smile knowing it’s helped.

I love my old 1200U as well, I think it’s because when I bought it it was sensational (or I thought it was), it’s just sturdy.

It does seem very powerful the compatibility feature, again something I don’t use enough. I think it worked the same for my Logitech Quickcam 4000/5000 as well!

    Cheers
