Well I need to erase all the original iTunes songs on it and start a fresh, again without installing iTunes. Go to the Apple website and search out the iPod Reset Utility.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodresetutility104forwindows.html

NB: This DOESN’T work under Vista, those bastards at Apple decided to stitch Windows users by not releasing a current version.

It’ll erase it, put the latest firmware on, then just add the Shuffle updater from here and use your Shuffle sans iTunes!

Fed up using iTunes to manage your iPod shuffle? I am, and I found this brilliant app that allows you to use a shuffle just like any regular usb flash mp3 player. Just drop your songs onto your shuffle when it’s discovered as a usb storage device, run the app that is stored on the drive, and it rebuilds your song list. It even works alongside your existing iTunes songs if you want it.

http://shuffle-db.sourceforge.net/

The app hasn’t been updated since April 2006, but it works fine.
